The French go to the first round of general elections, in which the newly founded En Marche! party led by President Emmanuel Macron is expected to win a comfortable majority over the formerly powerful socialdemocratic and conservative parties, as well as over Le Pen's nationalists.

A total of 7.882 candidates compete for 577 seats in the National Assembly. Polls show Macron in the lead with between 29 and 32 percent of the votes, followed by the conservative Republican Party with between 19 and 23 percent. If the polls prove correct, Macron could win between about 300 and 430 seats in the 577 seat Assembly, giving his centrist party the largest majority in recent history.
