In view of recent media publications concerning Macedonia's immediate accession to NATO, the Alliance said Friday the door for membership remains open in line with the conclusion of the 2008 Bucharest Summit - settlement of the Macedonia-Greece name issue first, followed by an invitation for membership, MIA reports from Brussels.
“Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has no immediate plans to visit the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, but he looks forward to the visit of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev to Brussels on Monday 12 June," a NATO official has told MIA on the condition of anonymity.
The official said NATO will support efforts to address urgently needed reforms, including on good governance and the rule of law.
"Reforms will make the country stronger and more democratic. Our door remains open, and our Bucharest decision stands, as reiterated at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016," it is concluded.
