German Foreign Affairs Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that Turkish authorities have crossed the line when they accused the German Government of acting like in the Nazi times over its ban of election campaigns for the Turkish referendum.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel or Nazi-like methods over the bans which have also sparked tensions between Turkey and the Netherlands. Turkey holds a referendum that would increase the powers of the President in mid-April and authorities in European Union countries have prevented campaign events for Turkish citizens in their countries, with the Netherlands even turning back high-level Government ministers while they were en route.

"We are tolerant but we are not idiots. I have clearly told Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu that they have crossed a line", said Foreign Minister Gabriel.
